Teaching children about charity

I’ve seen a lot of talk lately in my online circles about how to teach children about the value of giving back.  Some great suggestions have come up, like volunteering time at a soup kitchen, setting aside some allowance for donation, etc.

Last week I tried a new service that is a great way to teach kids around the time of their birthdays.  GiftAround is a service to let you pick presents with your kids (for their birthday party) and have guests contribute to them (instead of getting a bunch of crap that nobody wants).  The big teaching moment here is that you can set aside up to 25% of the contributions to go to a charity.  I loved sitting down and looking through the list of kid-focused charities and choosing the one we all wanted.  This was a great way to explain each of these non-profits, and letting my child decide where he wanted his money to go.

Highly recommended.
